David, All understood. My earlier posts indicate that a generator overhaul, including field coils, would probably be desirable. With the power steering in the way can you still access the oiler on the rear of the generator? At the rear of these units is normally found a sinterted bush which acts like blotting paper and holds a charge of oil. A tell tale sign of a dry bush is a squeal that increases with rpm.  As an after thought if it ends up being a rather time/ costly "dockyard" job is it worth considering replacing the top suspension rubber bushes too if they have never been done? I know it is a terrible job especially the offside one with the steering box in the way.   Keep us all informed. Richard (Melbourne) Posted by RichardWallach 02/08/2014 00:13:19
