Hand Brake

As it was nice and sunny, I spent yesterday afternoon completely stripping and rebuilding the handbrake mechanism. All parts of the mechanism were removed, with the exception of the cable, which was lubricated and fully slackened off. The pad carrier pins were lubricated and the pad carriers refitted, then the pads adjusted so that they only just don't drag (pads having previously been modified to the correct face angle). Next the Maltese Christmas tree assembly was greased up and refitted - some wear was noted in these parts. Then the transverse rods installed, with their swivels lubricated, and adjusted up, again so that the pads only just don't drag. Finally the handbrake cable tensioned so that the last bit of slack is removed when applied to the first click. The car now passes the steepest-hill-in-Suffolk test with the handbrake lever at an angle of about 30 degrees, and five clicks. Whether or not it will need adjusting again prior to the MOT remains to be seen. Posted by greg124 11/05/2013 17:01:58

Clive,  Write it up for the Bulletin!  I'm sure there is a lot of dodgy handbrakes out there.    Angus Posted by Angus D'Arcy-Drake 13/05/2013 09:00:47
