TF21 Brake upgrade

On 18 May 2009 an item appeared on the old Bulletin Board concerning an upgrade to Coopercraft calipers, accompanied by the following remark "The Moderator remembers an earlier post from Bob Clark on this subject, pointing out that the 4-pot calipers used on the Volvo 240 fit with minimal adaption at a fraction of the price of the Coopercraft items."   Does anyone know (Mr Clark perhaps?) what adaptation/s is/are required for the Volvo units and can they be fitted both front and rear? similar discussion using the same components to upgrade the Dunlop calipers on a Jensen 541R and 541S involve machining the outer radius of the disc down very slightly to allow use of the Volvo calipers. I hesistate to recommend it, but there is a description of this disc mod on a jaguar forum somwhere on the net (it uses a technique that I cannot recommend, but at least you can appreciate the scope of the modification). I have fitted coopercraft calipers on the front of both my 541R and my 541S and highly recommend them - there are other more sesnible options for the rear calipers. PS I do not own a post war Alvis, so I am not certain of the applicability or correctness of the above information in the context of a TF21. Posted by DaveT 22/11/2012 12:24:16

I had the Coopercraft system (front and rear) fitted on my TE21 in 2004. It seemed expensive at the time, but has been well worth it over the years. The pads used are the same as the E Type Jaguar and have survived very well.  David. Posted by DavidMJS 22/11/2012 18:20:48

I also have Coopercraft brakes on my TE21. They stop the car confidently but I find the pedal pressure high. The servo is the standard fitment from RT. I put this down to changes to the composition of the brake pads since the 1960s. Does anyone else share this experience? Are there softer pads around/bigger servo? All of my cars are on standard well mentioned brakes .I push the cars hard and only once had a problem in over 30 years,that was after a specialist service.I am not going back there again! A belated happy new year to all Adam . Posted by Stagbeetle 18/01/2013 21:00:19

Gentlemen  Thank you all for your contributions. I concluded that grinding down the brake discs so that they could be accommodated by Volvo 240 calipers was not ideal and so I have had Coopercraft calipers fitted. I can't detect any difference in the braking effort required and under normal driving conditions there really doesn't seem to be much difference at all, but when I tried some emergency stops the new brakes were far more effective which is very comforting to know.  After the event I learned that Zeus also provide a conversion kit similar to Coopercraft costing about £30 less before VAT for the front calipers.
