The heater tap on TA-TC cars is the Smiths 3 position type. When viewing the heater controls the Off (far left) position actually has the tap open, the middle off, is closed and the far right is open again. I would appreciate responses that explains why Smiths adopted this approach. Was this an Alvis specification in order to allow coolant flow with a closed thermostat or just common practice?
