OIL LEAK

Having recently purchased my TA 14, I was surprised to see so much oil was dripping from beneath the engine/gearbox area.  I have been told this is to be expected due to the old type seals, which I can understand. However if there is anything that can be done to reduce the leak, I would appreciate any comments. Posted by Faylen 12/09/2015 17:17:19

Terry, is it engine oil or gearbox oil?  Richard Melbourne Posted by RichardWallach 12/09/2015 21:22:50

High Mileage oils claim to have an additive which rejuvenates/swells seals.  No personal experience, but do know of others (not Alvis) who report success. Posted by johnlayzell 13/09/2015 15:04:42

I have not been under the car and cannot tell if engine or gearbox, plus if I did look I probably would not be able to tell as I am not mechanical. The car is booked into my local garage on 19th Oct and I have asked him to look at it.  The high mileage oil sounds as if might help, provided I can at least reduce the leak a little.   Thanks for comments.   Faylen Posted by Faylen 23/09/2015 17:04:17

Is the oil really dirty or relatively clean. Placing it between your fingers and holding a film will help tell. If relatively clean it is probably gear box oil. If my memory serves me correctly there is no seal at the input end. Oil is prevented from escaping (relatively speaking) by a reverse thread on the shaft that screws the oil backwards.    Richard Melbourne Posted by RichardWallach 24/09/2015 11:53:34
