Martin - can't help you with that spec, but I will tell you some years ago I filled with a modern equivalent and it pretty much drained out overnight.  Since then I've kept the steering box filled with light grease and all appears to work well. John Posted by johnlayzell 26/06/2012 13:29:04

Penrite Steering Lube is the stuff.  It's a very high viscosity lubricant which hardly ever leaks, but unlike grease it does settle back into all the nooks and crannies and does not leave hollows opened up by the motion of the moving parts. To get it into the box it's better to leave the bottle in very hot water until it's hot enough to reduce the viscosity slightly. Also it's designed for steering boxes! The other stuff you could use is the graphite grease developed for use on Landrover hubs.  It is available from most dealers in a pouch, that can be easily squeezed into the steering box.  It was developed because the hubs leak and this stuff won't leak out. I am using Morris's Steam oil to great effect. The box does not leak and feels much better in use, particualy coming off lock, but don't ask me why!! Used by many Derby Bentley owners to great effect. Posted by Mike Wheadon 20/07/2012 17:19:29

I've fitted modern lip seals to the output shaft and the pass through for the steering boss controls of my Sp20 SC and now use EP140 - lovely fluid steering, no leaks and should never wear out. Fairly radical but permanent and works so well. Just have to remember to drain it before pulling the central shaft out though.  Might not be approved by some purists but the cars there to be used.  Shaun Posted by shaun matthews 21/07/2012 09:01:16

I also installed oil seals on the output shaft of my steering box, but would like to change the oil to one of these super oils! How do I drain the oil out.... is there a drain plug that I'm not seeing? Posted by IanHardaker 14/10/2012 20:09:13

Some time back I had my SP25 steering box overhauled by Steering Services in Wimbledon. When collecting I discussed oils. They recommended Castrol 140. Penrite is apparently a bit thick for getting into small gaps. They did a good job on the box, fitting modern seals where necessary and seeing to the bearings which are seemingly more responsible than wear on the gears for causing play in the straight-ahead position of the steering wheel. After 5000 miles I have no drips or complaints. To change the oil I reckon you will only be able to drain completely by removing the box from the chassis. Taking the levers and plates off the end and will let out quite a lot, then standing it up vertically will drain the rest. Posted by rogergooding 29/11/2012 10:59:11
