12/70 rear axle oil leak

I am weeping oil from the end plate of the rear axle on the offside. It is not the oil seal on the shaft, but appears to be from an endplate riveted to the casing about 3" in from the end. Has anyone else come across this problem and is there a way of repairing and how, e.g brazing around the joint?  Arthur Brown Posted by arthur 23/10/2013 18:23:07

I experienced this problem many years ago. The solution was to strip and degrease the whole thing, then make up a dolly to fit tightly inside the axle casing, heat the rivets red hot with oxy acetylene and bash them tight. This stopped the end piece moving on the axle tube. I then applied one of the 'gap filling' Loctite variants to the joint and painted the axle. It has not leaked since.
